Friends:

We had people at The Creeks and in Town on Saturday. But we still hauled away 100 pounds of debris.

We will make one last try for 2011 this Saturday, December 3rd. We will meet in Town (Grand Union Lot) at 8:00 a.m., rain or shine.

Many thanks. All best wishes during the Holidays and in the New Year.

Back to you in March (Trustees need us at Coatue?) and in April for sure. We will start our tenth season.

‘Till then: all on Adjunk Status: find it wherever you are. All day, every day.

The Clean Team – Take a Break

Dear Friends:

Sarah and Grant report that we had 12 Volunteers on Saturday the 22nd at Surfside.

Filled John’s truck to the top. It never ceases to amaze me on the amount of trash determined eyes can find.

We will reconvene as a Team in mid-April.

To each of you my/our heartfelt thanks for your efforts and support. All best wishes during the Holidays and in the New Year. Really doubt that there is as dedicated a group of Volunteers anywhere else in this world. Nantucket deserves nothing less.

Last Call for 2011

Friends:

We had eight volunteers on Saturday for Milestone, Old South and Stop and Shop.

We could have used 80 people; so heavy was the litter.

Our last clean-up of our season is this Saturday at 8:00 a.m. meeting at the Surfside Beach parking lot.

We will not meet in Town. All of us revert (on October 23rd) to “adjunk” status: picking up on our own all the time.

The Clean Team – Winding Down

Our numbers are coming down. My e-mails are even less wordy.

Five of us cleaned up the Monomoy Beach area and hauled away a half-truck full of debris. We had three volunteers in Town.

This Saturday, October 15th, we will meet:

1. in Town at 8:00 a.m. (Grand Union Lot); and

2. The Rotary – I&M Building at 8:00 a.m. Screwing up our courage, we will tackle Old South Road and the Stop and Shop Area.

Monomoy on Saturday

Friends:

Even Saturday’s downpour from 8:00-8:20 a.m. did not stop seven of us from clearing Nobadeer Farm Road, Old South (to Naushop), Milestone Road (to Tawpoot) and the Delta Playing Fields of a truck load of trash.

Three of us cleaned up the Children’s Beach area after the Maritime Festival.

So, all in all, another strong showing. But the number of volunteers is dwindling. Our season winds down.

This Saturday, October 8th, we will meet:

1. in Town at 8:00 a.m. (Grand Union Lot); and

2. at Monomoy Beach. Drive down Monomoy Road until you must turn right (or drive through a home and into the harbor). We will gather at that point.

Hoicks Hollow on Saturday

Another stunning Saturday. Had a small turn-out (seven on Madaket Road and four in Town). But we made real progress. Cleaned six miles of Madaket Road and over a mile on Eel Point Road.

Odd event of the week: a Clean Teamer picking away on Milestone Road was stopped by The Police. A “tip” had been called in under the “See Something, Say Something” Program in effect nationwide.

Suspected of “digging in a field” (Indian artifacts/grave robbing??), the Volunteer displayed proudly her lime-green Clean Team Shirt. The Officer (reluctantly) dropped his weapon (joking) and resumed his patrol. That’s enough excitement for anyone on Nantucket!

Next events: This Saturday, September 24th:

A. Town at 8:00 a.m. – Grand Union Lot; and

B. Beautiful stretch of shoreline, not often seen – end of Hoicks Hollow Road (take Polpis Road and turn left on to Hoicks). Drive to Sankaty Beach Club. John will be there at 9:00 a.m. Free Sankaty Head of debris.

And a heads-up: gellato and cookies after assisting the Maritime Festival tidy up. Meet on October 1 at 4:00 p.m. at Children’s Beach – clad in our Clean Team shirts, our only refuge in these Troubled Times.

Madaket on Saturday

Friends:

One of the best things of being a Clean Team Volunteer is seeing our dunes and shoreline at 8:00 a.m. Just stunning last Saturday at Ladies Beach. Ten of us were there. Very clean, but one tire, one portable grill and an eight foot piece of lumber later, it was pristine.

We also had five volunteers in Town including our Super Star Herb who took on Washington Street, Orange Street, the Dreaded Cumby’s, etc. Town and Peggy’s Crown are a match made in Heaven. Need them every day.

A few thank yous are in order:

– the friends who have donated gloves and bags;

– the gentleman who donated funds to purchase a wooden trash barrel (still working on placement, style – HDC! approval, etc.); and

– Nantucket Community Sailing for giving the Team an award for keeping litter away from our Waters.

On a sad note: Marc and Roxanne have left The Building (with our great thanks and respect). Polpis and Milestone Roads, you are on your own! Or are you? We are now instituting the new program:

Spot it? Stop. Get it.

This Saturday, September 17th, we shall again meet in crisp, sparkling sunshine (or in rain) at 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. and not a minute more at:

A. Grand Union Lot; and

B. Entrance to the Landfill on Madaket Road (John: take a break. We’ll be on our own and fine). We will try to concentrate on Madaket Road from Sanford Farm all the way to Madaket.

Winding down…

Friends:

Shining, beautiful beach on Saturday at the “Sewer Beds”. We had our band of eleven, and they swept it and the nearby roads broom-clean. No Naturists in sight.

We also had:

- eight volunteers in Town; and

- a huge effort from Roxanne (her next-to-last): six bags from six miles on Milestone Road. Sure looked great for a while.

This Saturday, September 10th:

A. 8:00 a.m. in Town at Grand Union Lot; and

B. 8:00 a.m. to clear Ladies Beach. We will meet at the entrance to Bartlett’s Farm (John will pick up from us there as well). Then we will drive to the two or three parking areas near the Ocean. Let’s get a two mile stretch (need 15 for that).

Our schedule for the balance of September (always 8-9 a.m. and rain or shine) has us in Town each Saturday and:

- September 17th: Madaket Road. Meet at the Landfill Entrance and we will take another stab at this “hot spot”.

- September 24th: Meet at Sankaty Beach Club at the end of Hoicks Hollow Road. We will move toward the Lighthouse. Not even Peter can keep this area clean.

- October 1st: Meet at Milestone Road and Nobadeer Farm Road. We will concentrate on the playing fields just past Sun Island Storage.

Lovers Lane Clean!

We had 11 stalwarts with us on Saturday as we cleaned all of Old South Road and all of Lovers Lane. Loved every messy minute (60) of it. Filled John’s F-250 with 600 pounds of debris (chair, tire, etc.)

That effort was supplemented by four volunteers in Town.

This Saturday (and every Saturday), we will meet in Town at 8:00 a.m. – Grand Union Lot plus a special area in need of attention; namely,

- Saturday, September 3rd (I knew it would finally arrive): Sewer Beds Beach Lots of possibilities down there. We will drive toward Surfside Beach on Surfside Road. Turn right on to South Shore Road – South Shore Road is at the intersection – with Fairgrounds Road. Stop where South Shore Road ends. John will meet us there. We will meander down the dirt road which leads to the Beach and fan out. Some go seeking the Naturists. I’ll head in the other direction.

News gets better and better

The news gets better and better:

– Roxanne missed a week due to work demands and made up for it by hauling six bags off of Milestone’s first three miles (both sides of the road: six miles of work);

– Marc got a bag from Polpis;

– Seven volunteers in Town. Could have used 70;

– 27 scoured Eel Point Rd., 40th Pole and Dionis Dunes and Beach (including Tom and Connie’s area); and

– the best news of all: of the 27, 15 were children and grandchildren. Just a wonderful sight, and all in their lime green shirts. Teach the Children Well.

This Saturday, August 27th: 8:00 a.m., rain or shine (keep shining on us):

– Grand Union Lot; and

– Lovers’ Lane (corner of Old South Road and the Lane).

Saturday, September 3rd will be Sewer Beds Beach at the end of South Shore Road, off of Surfside Road.

Saturday, September 10th (new listing) will find us at Ladies Beach. Pass entrance to Bartlett Farm. Dirt road straight to the Ocean.

P.S. A Teamer hauled a sixty pound tire on a rusted rim plus sand about 1/4 mile from Dionis Beach to the Parking Lot. I’d say vintage 1969 – summer idle.
